Saturday 11th August 2001

The main group (1 Leader and 2 Scouts) left Chiltern Lower School at 8.30am on what was a rather wet and miserable day, with a long journey ahead. The final Scout was picked up on route to the motorway. Shortly into the journey, it was realised that parts of the poles for the mess tent had not been picked up, but it was too late to go back now. After a longer than anticipated journey, hindered by the inclement weather, the camp site was reached at approximately 5.30pm. Site number 7 was to be home for the next few days - unfortunately this was at the far end of the site along a rather muddy track, so a few miles would be walked by the end of the camp. Our own vehicles were not allowed on site, but the camp staff were only too willing to tow the trailer to our site. It was now time to set up camp - in the rain. Two hikes tents for the Scouts and two for the leaders with a communal dining tent and store tent. It was discovered that the wrong poles had been packed with the dining tent (too short), so some quick thinking had to be done to make the poles fit. The other leader arrived at 8pm to find all tents (except his own) already pitched - good timing. By 9pm most things had been tidied away, the rain was easing off, and it was time for a late dinner of corned beef, potatoes and peas. With the rain dying off, the midges started to come alive - here to haunt us for most of our stay. After the washing and tidying up from dinner, there were a few tired people, so we called it a day at 11.15pm.
