Saturday 23rd August 2003

We had a long journey ahead of us, so an early start was required - 6.30am at Sainsbury's carpark. Everyone made it on time and we were packed and ready to go by 6.45am. After saying our farewells, we were on our way to Auchengillan. The weather was overcast, but dry, so hopefully the journey ahead wouldn't be too unbearable. Stopped at Sandbach for a quick comfort break, by which time is had started drizzling. The rain continued and the clouds were low particularly through The Lakes, but by the time we crossed the border and stopped for lunch at Gretna (11.15am) it was warm and sunny. After an hour, we set off again and continued to make good progress until we got stuck in traffic on the M8 in Glasgow. This delayed us for about an hour, so it was gone 3.30pm when we arrived on site. After being shown our site by the Warden, we got underway with setting up camp. This was more or less completed by 6.30pm when we made a start on dinner of chicken drumsticks with potatoes and beans. After which, we had a walk around the rest of the site, by which time the midges had come out - no doubt a sign of what was to come for the rest of the week. As everyone was so tired after a long day, we had a quick supper and headed for bed. Silence by 10pm !!
